26 March 2025: Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent (Homily/Sermon)
Living God’s Law with Love and Faithfulness
God’s commandments are not burdens but gifts. They are meant to guide us, protect us, and lead us to a life of true joy and peace. Today’s readings remind us that faithfulness to God’s Word brings blessings, not only for us but for future generations.
A man once said, "Father, I follow the Ten Commandments… I just adjust them to fit my lifestyle!"
Many of us do the same—we pick and choose which of God’s laws to follow. But today, Jesus reminds us that God’s Word is not negotiable.
-
Deuteronomy 4:1, 5-9 – Moses urges the Israelites to obey God’s statutes so they may live wisely and be a light to other nations. He reminds them to teach these laws to their children so that faith continues across generations.
-
Psalm 147 – A song of gratitude, celebrating how God strengthens and blesses those who remain faithful to Him.
-
Matthew 5:17-19 – Jesus clarifies that He did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfil it. The commandments remain essential, but they must be lived out with love, sincerity, and faithfulness.
Jesus calls us to a deeper, more personal relationship with God—not just following rules but living them with hearts full of love.
In the Eucharist, we encounter the Word made flesh. Jesus, who fulfilled the Law perfectly, strengthens us to live out God’s commands in truth, love, and action.
Question for Reflection
Do I see God’s commandments as a burden, or do I embrace them as a path to true freedom and joy?
Daily Practical Application
-
Learn and live the Word – Spend time reflecting on Scripture and let it shape your actions.
-
Be an example – Teach younger generations about faith through your words and actions.
-
Obey with love – Follow God’s commands, not out of fear, but out of love for Him and others.
If you are struggling, hold on to God’s Word. It is a lamp in darkness and a shield in times of trouble. Trust that God’s strength is with you, even when life is tough.
What Can I Do During the Jubilee Year?
-
Deepen my knowledge of God’s Word.
-
Live my faith with sincerity and integrity.
-
Pass on faith to the next generation.
-
Work for justice, peace, and unity in my community.
As Pilgrims of Hope preparing for Jubilee 2025, let us walk in faithfulness, inspire others, and be lights in our world.
God’s law is not about restrictions—it is about guidance, wisdom, and love. May we embrace it not just with our minds, but with our hearts and lives.
Lord, teach me to love Your Word and to live by it daily. Help me to be faithful, to inspire others, and to walk in Your truth. Amen.
Just as Ubuntu teaches us that “a person is a person through others”, so too does God’s law remind us that our faith is meant to build and uplift our communities.
