Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord (Homily/Sermon)

"Let it be done to me according to Your Word"

A young man once prayed, “Lord, show me Your will… but please make sure it aligns with my plans.” Many of us are like that—we want God's guidance, but only if it fits into our schedule! Today, we celebrate Mary, who surrendered completely to God’s will, even when it disrupted her plans.

The Annunciation is one of the most profound moments in salvation history. The angel Gabriel appears to Mary with an overwhelming message—she will conceive the Son of God. At first, she is troubled, but after questioning, she responds with faith: "Let it be done to me according to Your word."

Mary’s “yes” is not passive submission but an act of courageous trust. She doesn't fully understand how things will unfold, but she believes in the One who calls her. Unlike Ahaz in Isaiah, who refuses to trust God’s sign, Mary embraces it wholeheartedly. The letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Christ Himself came to do the Father's will—just as Mary did.

In the Eucharist, we encounter the same mystery of surrender. Jesus, like Mary, says “Yes” to the Father. As we receive Him in Communion, we too are invited to say, "Lord, let Your will be done in my life."

Question for Reflection

How often do I say “yes” to God with my whole heart, even when I don’t understand His plans?

Daily Practical Application

Today, imitate Mary’s faith by saying a small “yes” to God. It could be helping someone in need, praying for guidance, or accepting a challenge with trust.

Mary’s life wasn’t easy. She faced uncertainty, misunderstanding, and suffering. If you are struggling today, take comfort—God is with you, just as He was with Mary.

What Can I Do During the Jubilee Year?

Use this Jubilee Year to renew your “yes” to God. Take time to listen to His voice and respond with faith. Seek reconciliation where needed and open your heart to grace.

Mary was the first Pilgrim of Hope—she stepped into the unknown, trusting that God would provide. Let us follow her example as we journey in faith.

The Annunciation teaches us that God’s plans are greater than ours. When we say “yes” like Mary, we become part of His divine work in the world.

Heavenly Father, like Mary, may we trust in Your word, even when we don’t understand. Give us the courage to say “yes” to You daily. Amen.
