Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent (Homily/Sermon)

Theme: “Light in the Valley of Shadows”
Readings: Daniel 13:1-62 (or 13:41c-62) | Psalm 23 | John 8:12-20
Gospel Acclamation: “I do not wish the sinner to die, says the Lord, but to turn to me and live.” (Ezekiel 33:11)

πŸŽ‰ They say “Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.” Someone once said, “I’m walking in the valley of the shadow of death… but my GPS says it’s just a detour!” That’s Lent for you—it reminds us that the detour can become the road to transformation.

πŸ•―️

In Daniel 13, we meet Susanna—falsely accused, unjustly threatened, but ultimately vindicated because of her unwavering faith in God. Her story is echoed in the Gospel, where Jesus proclaims:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

This isn’t just poetic—it’s powerful. The same God who walked with Susanna walks with us when we are misunderstood, isolated, or overwhelmed. Jesus shines light not just on our path, but into our soul.

Psalm 23 reminds us:

“Even though I walk in the dark valley, I fear no evil; for you are at my side.”

The dark valleys are real—poverty, illness, injustice, anxiety—but so is His presence.

πŸ•Š️ Eucharist

In the Eucharist, the Lord is not only at our side—He is within us. He feeds us with courage, with truth, with love. We come as we are—battered, maybe burdened—and leave renewed by His presence.

Question for Reflection

Where in your life do you need the light of Christ to shine? Who around you needs to be reminded that God has not abandoned them?

🧭 Daily Practical Application

Be light today: speak truth when it's uncomfortable, defend the innocent when it's unpopular, and pray for those who feel alone. Even a text message of encouragement or a simple smile can scatter darkness.

πŸ’” To anyone feeling overwhelmed, falsely judged, or trapped in fear: Susanna’s story and Jesus’ words remind us—God sees, God knows, and God saves. Do not lose hope. This valley is not forever.

πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

In South Africa, where the valleys of inequality, crime, and hopelessness run deep—we are called to be candles in the dark. Not perfect, but present. Not afraid, but faithful. Lent calls us to shine where others only complain about the darkness.

Pilgrims of Hope

The Jubilee Year is a call to renewal. What can you do? Be a Pilgrim of Hope:

  • Visit someone sick.

  • Advocate for justice.

  • Reignite a prayer group.

  • Bring someone back to Church.

πŸ’¬ Quote for the Day

“Light doesn't have to shout. It just has to shine.” – African Proverb

πŸ™

Lord Jesus,
You are the Light that no darkness can extinguish.
Walk with me through this day.
Shine in my words, actions, and decisions.
When I am tempted to despair, remind me of Susanna.
When I feel alone, remind me of Your promise:
“I am the light of the world.”
Help me to be a light to my family, my parish, and my South Africa.
Amen.
