Thursday of the Fourth Week of Lent (Homily/Sermon)
God’s Mercy and Our Call to Faithfulness
There is a story of a little boy who tried to help his mother bake a cake. He ended up making a mess—flour on the floor, eggs cracked on the counter. He stood nervously, expecting a scolding, but instead, his mother smiled and said, "Let’s clean up together." This is exactly how God deals with us. We make a mess with our sins, but He is always ready to forgive and restore us.
In Exodus 32:7-14, we see Israel’s great betrayal—while Moses was on Mount Sinai, the people turned to a golden calf, forgetting God’s faithfulness. Yet, despite their unfaithfulness, Moses interceded, and God showed mercy. This mirrors how Jesus, in John 5:31-47, calls the people to believe in Him, the One sent by the Father. Yet, many rejected Him, preferring human approval over divine truth.
We, too, sometimes turn away from God. We may not worship golden calves, but we idolise money, power, status, and our own comfort. Like the Israelites, we can be quick to forget God when life is good, and only call on Him when we are in trouble. But today’s readings remind us—God remains faithful even when we are not.
The Eucharist is the ultimate sign of God’s mercy. Just as Moses pleaded for the people, Jesus intercedes for us every time we receive His Body and Blood. It is a moment of grace, a call to return to Him wholeheartedly.
Question for Reflection
Have I placed anything above God in my life? What "golden calves" do I need to let go of?
Daily Practical Application
-
Take time to examine your heart and identify anything that is pulling you away from God.
-
Commit to a small act of faithfulness—prayer, charity, or forgiveness.
-
Spend time with scripture, allowing God’s Word to guide your decisions.
If you feel lost or have made mistakes, remember: God does not abandon His children. Like Moses interceded for Israel, Jesus is interceding for you. He does not want to condemn you but to restore you.
What Can I Do During the Jubilee Year?
-
Use this time to renew your commitment to God.
-
Help someone in need—a small act of kindness can change a life.
-
Reflect on your spiritual journey and ask God for guidance.
No sin is too great for God’s mercy. No mistake is beyond His forgiveness. Just as He did not abandon Israel, He will not abandon you.
"God’s mercy is greater than your mistakes—turn to Him and be renewed."
As a country, we have faced many betrayals—corruption, injustice, division. But if we return to God, He can heal our land. Let us not put our trust in false idols but in the One who gives true hope.
In this Jubilee Year, let us walk as Pilgrims of Hope, carrying God’s love wherever we go.
Like the boy in the kitchen, we may have made a mess, but God invites us to clean up together. He does not reject us—He restores us. Let us return to Him with open hearts.
In the spirit of ubuntu, let us remember that our journey with God is not just personal—it is communal. Let’s lift each other up in faith, prayer, and action.
Lord, I come before You with all my weaknesses and failings. Have mercy on me, and help me to remain faithful to You. May I always seek You above all things. Amen.
