Short Homily for the Fifth Sunday of Easter

Readings: Acts 14:21–27 | Psalm 145:8–13 | Revelation 21:1–5a | John 13:31–33a, 34–35
Theme: “See, I am making all things new.” (Revelation 21:5)

πŸ˜„

Many years ago, a young boy asked his Gogo why her Bible looked so old and worn out. She replied, “Because I actually read it, my boy!” He thought for a moment and said, “Then mine must be brand new forever!”
It’s true — we often keep the Word of God neatly on our shelves instead of living it out. But today, Christ calls us not to preserve the Gospel in a book, but to embody it through love.

πŸ“– The Word of God

The Gospel of John presents us with one of the most profound and revolutionary teachings of Jesus:

“I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you.”
It’s not just about being nice — it’s sacrificial, self-giving love.
In Acts, we see the early Church returning to the places where they had been persecuted, to strengthen the faith of the new disciples.
And Revelation gives us a vision of a new heaven and a new earth — not just someday in the future, but starting now, when we love boldly.

✝️ Eucharist – Where Love Is Made Visible

At this altar, Christ gives us His Body — not a symbol, but real love poured out. The Eucharist is where love meets sacrifice. And as we receive Him, we are strengthened to become what we receive — living love.

Question for Reflection

What small act of love can I do this week that will show others I am a disciple of Jesus?

πŸ› ️ Daily Practical Application

– Visit someone who is lonely.
– Say sorry to someone you’ve hurt.
– Choose kindness even when it’s hard.
As South Africans, we know the power of reconciliation and ubuntu — that I am because we are. Let’s live that truth in small ways daily.

🌧️ For Those Who Encounter Difficulties

Life in Mzansi isn’t always easy — with high unemployment, crime, and deep wounds. But Christ walks with us. Even the early Church had “many hardships” (Acts 14:22). God never promised an easy road, but He did promise that He makes all things new.

πŸŽ‰ What Can I Do During the Jubilee Year?

Renew your faith by joining a Bible study or prayer group.
Open your heart to migrants, the poor, or the marginalised.
Become a Pilgrim of Hope by encouraging someone who’s struggling.
This year isn’t just about Rome — it’s about your home.

🌟 Inspiration – Words to Live By

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13:35
In a world growing colder, let your love be warmer.

πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ South African Touch

Imagine if our parishes were known not by their fences and gates, but by their love — a braai of grace, a ubuntu of the Spirit, a Mamelodi of mercy.

πŸ› Conclusion and Short Prayer

Jesus is not asking us to be perfect — only to love like He did. Start small. Begin today.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, teach me to love like You — not only those who are easy to love, but those who challenge me. Let me become a builder of hope, a bringer of joy, and a disciple who walks the road of love.
Amen.
