Homily: Monday of the Seventh Week of Easter
Theme: Take Courage — The Holy Spirit Gives Us Strength in Trouble
📖 Readings:
-
Acts 19:1–8
-
Psalm 68:2–3ab, 4–5ac, 6–7ab — "Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth."
-
John 16:29–33 — "In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world!"
😂 Introduction
Years ago, I asked a young man preparing for confirmation to name the gifts of the Holy Spirit. He paused and said confidently, “Gift cards, airtime, and chocolates!” Clearly, we all long for gifts — but Jesus offers us something far better!
📖 Expanded Exegesis
Today’s readings highlight divine empowerment. In Acts, Paul finds disciples who’ve never heard of the Holy Spirit. They’re believers, but missing the power! After baptism and the laying on of hands, the Spirit comes with boldness, speech, and strength.
In John’s Gospel, Jesus faces his own suffering, and speaks plainly: "You will have trouble." But then He adds what changes everything: "Take courage. I have conquered the world!"
This courage is not based on human willpower — it is Spirit-born. That same Spirit is given to us!
🕊️ Eucharist
Here at the table, Jesus gives us himself — the Conqueror of the world — in bread and wine. We do not walk alone. The Eucharist is food for our journey as pilgrims of hope.
❓ Question for Reflection
Do I live with the inner strength of someone filled with the Holy Spirit — or do I live as if I am still waiting for God’s help?
🛠️ Daily Practical Application
Encourage one person today — in word or action. Let your joy, born of the Spirit, be someone else's strength.
❤️🩹 For Those Who Encounter Difficulties
You may feel forgotten, exhausted, or anxious. But the Spirit of God has not left you. Your suffering is not the end of the story. Like Paul’s converts, be open — let the Spirit fill the gaps.
🌍 What Can I Do During the Jubilee Year?
-
Spend time praying with the Acts of the Apostles.
-
Invite the Holy Spirit anew into your daily life.
-
Share hope, especially with the discouraged.
🌈 Inspiration – Pilgrims of Hope in South Africa
In a land still scarred by inequality and despair, we can be signs of a new dawn. Courage is resistance in action — not loud, but faithful. We walk as a people who know: the tomb is empty, and the Spirit is active.
💬 Inspirational Quote
“The Holy Spirit doesn’t make life easy — He makes us strong.”
🙏 Conclusion & Short Prayer
Lord Jesus,
When I feel weak or uncertain, remind me of your victory.
Let your Spirit give me the courage to face life with faith.
Fill me with joy, so that even in trouble, I can sing your praise.
Amen.
