😂 Introduction – Lightbulb Moments
I once tried to replace a lightbulb during load shedding… only to realise there was no power! We can have all the lightbulbs in the world, but without electricity, nothing shines. Similarly, Christians can have the name, the baptismal certificate, even the robe—but if we’re not connected to Christ the Light, we don’t shine.
🪔 The Word of God
St Paul in the first reading reminds us that all of God’s promises are “Yes” in Christ. And more than that, we have been sealed with the Holy Spirit, like a divine signature confirming God’s promise to dwell in us. That’s the power that fuels our witness.
Then Jesus turns to us in Matthew’s Gospel and says, “You are the light of the world… You are the salt of the earth.”
Salt preserves, adds flavour, and creates thirst. Light reveals, warms, and directs. That’s our job: to live so boldly and lovingly that people taste God in our kindness and see Christ in our courage.
✝️ Eucharist Connection
In the Eucharist, we encounter Christ the “Yes” of God. Here, He nourishes us to be faithful witnesses. As we receive His Body and Blood, we are reminded: we don’t shine by our own strength, but by the grace flowing from this altar.
❓ Question for Reflection
How brightly does my life shine with the light of Christ? Have I kept my spiritual saltiness, or have I blended too much with the world?
💡 Daily Practical Application
This week, choose one way to be salt or light:
-
Encourage someone battling depression.
-
Speak up where there's injustice.
-
Share a Bible verse online.
-
Or just smile with sincerity—many South Africans are starved of hope.
🌍 For Those Facing Difficulty
To the weary: even when you feel like a flickering candle or tasteless grain, remember—you are sealed with the Holy Spirit. God has not abandoned you. In our darkest hours, light shines brightest.
🕊️ What Can I Do During the Jubilee Year?
Live your faith out loud. Be a hope-bearer. Support a cause, volunteer, or simply love louder. We are Pilgrims of Hope, walking not just to survive, but to help others rise.

🙏 Conclusion and Prayer
Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, You are the Yes of God and the Light of the world. Shine through me today. Make me salt where hearts have grown bitter. Make me light where minds are lost in darkness. May this day reflect Your love, sealed in me by the Holy Spirit. Amen.
