Homily - Wednesday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Homily
Theme: “Forgive From the Heart”
Introduction
A man once said to his priest, “I’ve forgiven my brother more times than I can count, but he still annoys me!”
The priest replied, “Good—you’re in good company. God forgives you more times than you can count too.”
Forgiveness is not about keeping score—it’s about keeping our hearts free.
First Reading – Deuteronomy 34:1-12
Moses stands on Mount Nebo, seeing the Promised Land but not entering it. His life’s mission is complete, even if he doesn’t step into the final destination. Moses shows us that faithfulness is measured not by reaching every goal, but by walking obediently to the end of our journey. Leadership in God’s eyes is about service, not reward.
Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 66:1-3, 5, 8, 16-17
A psalm of praise: “Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer.” It is a reminder that God’s plans are greater than ours and that His answers—whether “yes,” “not yet,” or “I have something better”—are always rooted in love.
Gospel – Matthew 18:15-20
Jesus gives a process for reconciliation in the community. The goal is always to win back your brother or sister—not to prove you’re right. This is followed by the promise: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Forgiveness and unity invite God’s presence into our relationships.
Connection of the Readings
-
Moses reminds us that we may not always see the full results of our work, but faithfulness matters more than personal satisfaction.
-
Jesus teaches us that when relationships break down, God’s way is not to walk away but to take steps toward reconciliation.
-
Forgiveness is not weakness—it is the strength to release bitterness and choose peace.
South African Context
In our families, parishes, and even national life, grudges can last decades. Communities are broken not only by big betrayals but also by small, repeated offences that we refuse to forgive. If we can start healing in our own relationships, we plant seeds of peace in the wider society.
Practical Application for Today
-
Reach out to one person you’ve been avoiding—send a message, make a call, or pray sincerely for them.
-
In disagreements, aim to restore rather than win.
-
Remember: Forgiveness is a daily choice, not a one-time event.
Inspiration
“Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.” – Paul Boese
Conclusion
In the Kingdom of God, greatness is not measured by how much land we conquer, but by how much love we show. Forgiveness is not optional—it is the language of heaven.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me the grace to forgive as You forgive me—fully, freely, and from the heart. Heal every wound in my relationships, and let me be a channel of Your peace today. Amen.
