Homily for Wednesday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time (Cycle II)
📖 Readings:
-
1 Timothy 3:14–16
-
Psalm 111:1-2, 3-4, 5-6
-
Luke 7:31–35
Introduction
A little boy once complained to his mother: “Mom, school would be great if it weren’t for the teachers!” His mother laughed and replied: “No, my son, school is the teachers.” Sometimes we resist the very things that are meant to help us grow. Isn’t that just like our spiritual life—we resist God’s ways when they don’t suit us?
The Word of God
-
In 1 Timothy, Paul reminds the young Church that faith is not just an idea, but a “great mystery” revealed in Christ: God made visible in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, proclaimed to the nations, and believed in the world. Faith is embodied—it must be lived in community.
-
The Psalm praises God’s mighty works and faithfulness. His deeds are not hidden—they invite reflection, gratitude, and imitation.
-
In Luke 7, Jesus compares his generation to children who refuse to play no matter the game. They rejected John the Baptist’s austerity and also rejected Jesus’ joy. Their hearts were closed, unwilling to recognize God’s wisdom in either form.
Connection of the Readings
Together, these passages challenge us: do we recognize God’s wisdom when it comes in unexpected ways? Paul presents Christ as the living mystery, but the Gospel shows us how easily people dismiss Him. God’s works are mighty, but they demand open hearts.
Reflection Questions
-
Am I sometimes like the “children in the marketplace,” refusing to respond to God because His ways don’t match my expectations?
-
Do I welcome both the prophetic call to repentance and the joyful proclamation of grace?
-
How can I help my community to live out the “great mystery of faith” in practical ways this week?
Implications for Daily Living (Jubilee Year & Synodality)
-
The Jubilee invites us to rediscover the “mystery of Christ” as central to our lives, not as something distant.
-
Synodality calls us to listen to one another without dismissing voices that sound different. Like the Gospel crowd, we must avoid closing our ears to God’s surprising messengers.
-
Daily living means staying open—whether God’s wisdom comes through challenge (like John) or comfort (like Jesus).
Inspiration / Motivation
God’s wisdom is not bound to one style, one personality, or one method. He speaks in fasting and in feasting, in silence and in song. If I remain open, I will hear His voice everywhere.
Quote
“Wisdom is justified by all her children.” – Luke 7:35
Final Thoughts
The mystery of faith is Christ Himself, alive in our midst. To recognize Him, I need a humble, open heart—ready to listen, ready to respond, and ready to change.
Concluding Prayer
Lord Jesus, open my ears to hear Your voice,
whether You speak through challenge or through joy.
Keep me from pride that closes the heart,
and grant me the humility to embrace Your wisdom.
In this Jubilee year, may I walk with others,
listening, discerning, and proclaiming together
the great mystery of faith—Christ among us, hope of glory.
Amen.
