Homily - Friday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time (Cycle I, 2025):
📖 Readings:
-
1 Timothy 6:2c-12
-
Psalm 49:6-7, 8-10, 17-18, 19-20
-
Luke 8:1-3
Theme:
“True Riches: Living for Christ Alone.”
Introduction
We live in a world that often measures worth by wealth, status, or success. Yet today’s readings remind us that true wealth is not in possessions but in godliness, faith, and service.
The Word of God
-
1 Timothy 6:2c-12 – Paul warns Timothy against greed and the love of money, calling it a root of many evils. Instead, Christians must “pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.”
-
Psalm 49 – reminds us that wealth cannot save us from death; it cannot buy eternal life. Only God redeems.
-
Luke 8:1-3 – Jesus is accompanied by women who, out of gratitude for being healed, support His ministry with their resources. Their generosity reflects a heart transformed by God’s love.
Connection of the Readings
Paul cautions against the danger of selfish attachment to riches, while the Gospel shows how material wealth can be placed at the service of God’s kingdom. The psalm keeps us grounded: we bring nothing into this world and take nothing with us. The message is clear: what matters is not what we have, but how we use what we have in love and faith.
Lessons for Daily Life
-
Wealth is temporary; faith is eternal.
-
Greed leads to ruin, but generosity builds the kingdom.
-
True discipleship means using our gifts — money, time, or talents — for God’s glory.
-
Like the women who supported Jesus, we too are called to put our resources at the service of the Gospel.
Motivational/Inspirational
I may not have much, but in God’s hands even the little I offer can feed many. Generosity is not about how much I have, but how much I love.
Quote of the Day
“What you are is God’s gift to you; what you become is your gift to God.”
— Hans Urs von Balthasar
Final Thoughts
Let us not measure life by possessions or status but by love, service, and faith. When I give freely, I store up treasures in heaven that cannot be lost.
Final Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You call me to seek true riches, not in wealth or status, but in faith, love, and generosity.
Help me resist greed and selfishness.
Teach me to use all that I have for Your glory and in service to others.
May my life be a witness that true wealth is found only in You.
Amen.
