Homily – Memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi

Readings: Baruch 4:5-12, 27-29; Psalm 69:33-35, 36-37; Luke 10:17-24

Theme:

“Returning to God with Joy – Walking in the Footsteps of Francis”

Introduction:

Today we celebrate the beloved Poverello of Assisi, Saint Francis — a man of peace, humility, and radical simplicity. His life is a living Gospel, a song of praise to the Creator, and an invitation for us to return to God with open hearts.

Life story

You know, Francis once said: “Preach the Gospel at all times; use words if necessary.”
Sometimes I think if Francis were alive today, he’d have added, “…and maybe reduce the WhatsApp messages too!” — because some of us preach more with forwarded posts than with our lives!

The Word of God:

  • Baruch 4 speaks to a people in exile, urging them to take courage, return to God, and trust that He has not abandoned them. This mirrors Francis’ own conversion — from worldly pursuits to the joy of returning to the Father.

  • Psalm 69 is a cry of the poor, a reminder that God never despises His lowly ones. Francis lived this by choosing voluntary poverty and identifying with the poor and suffering Christ.

  • Luke 10 shows the disciples rejoicing that even demons submit in Jesus’ name. But Christ reminds them: “Rejoice not in this, but that your names are written in heaven.” Francis grasped this truth deeply. He didn’t rejoice in fame, miracles, or followers — his joy was knowing he was loved by God.

Connection of the Readings:

All three readings converge in the life of Francis:

  • He returned to God in humility (Baruch).

  • He embraced the cry of the poor (Psalm).

  • He rejoiced only in God’s love (Luke).

Practical Applications:

  1. Return to God daily – like Francis, we need ongoing conversion.

  2. Embrace simplicity – cut down on the noise, possessions, and pride that keep us from God.

  3. Choose joy in Christ – not in success or recognition, but in being children of God.

Quote of the Day:

“A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.” – Saint Francis of Assisi 🌞

Inspiration:

Saint Francis reminds us that holiness is not about doing extraordinary things, but about doing ordinary things with extraordinary love.

Final Thoughts:

In a world hungry for peace, burdened by greed, and divided by self-interest, Francis still speaks: “Repair my Church, which is falling into ruin.” And perhaps today, Christ is asking us the same.

Short Prayer:

Lord, through the intercession of Saint Francis, make me an instrument of Your peace today. Teach me simplicity, humility, and joy in You alone. May my life preach the Gospel, even when my lips are silent. Amen.
