Homily/Food for thought
Monday of the Third Week of Lent
Readings:
-
Second Book of Kings 5:1–15ab
-
Gospel of Luke 4:24–30
1. Introduction
My dear friend, today’s readings teach us something very important about faith and humility. Sometimes God answers our prayers, but not in the way we expect.
We want miracles to happen quickly and dramatically. But God often works through simple, ordinary instructions that require humility and trust.
The question today is: Are we humble enough to accept God’s way instead of insisting on our own?
2. Life Story
A man once prayed every day asking God to help him lose weight.
One morning he prayed,
“Lord, if you want me to stop eating sweets, please remove all the chocolate from the supermarket.”
Later that day he went shopping and came back disappointed.
He said, “Lord, I went to three supermarkets and the chocolate is still there!”
Sometimes we ask God to change the world around us when God is trying to change us first.
3. The Word (Understanding the Scriptures)
First Reading
In the Second Book of Kings, we meet Naaman, a powerful commander of the army of the king of Aram. Despite his success, he suffers from leprosy.
A young servant girl tells him about the prophet Elisha in Israel who can heal him.
Naaman travels with great expectations. But instead of a dramatic miracle, Elisha simply tells him to wash seven times in the Jordan River.
Naaman becomes angry because the instruction seems too simple. He expected something impressive.
Only when he humbles himself and obeys does the healing happen.
The lesson is clear: God’s grace often comes through humility and obedience.
The Gospel
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus Christ speaks in the synagogue of Nazareth and says that no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
He reminds the people that during the time of Elijah and Elisha, God’s miracles were given to outsiders—such as the widow of Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian.
The people become furious because they cannot accept that God’s grace is not limited by nationality, pride, or expectations.
Their hearts are closed, and they reject Jesus.
4. Three Practical Lessons for Today
1. God often works through simple things
Like Naaman washing in the Jordan, small acts of faith—prayer, forgiveness, kindness—can bring powerful transformation.
2. Humility opens the door to God’s grace
Pride prevents miracles. Humility allows God to work in our lives.
3. Do not reject God because He works differently than you expect
God’s plans are often surprising. Faith means trusting His wisdom.
5. Inspirational Quote
“God’s greatest miracles often begin with the smallest acts of humility.”
6. Conclusion
My friend, Naaman almost missed his miracle because of pride. The people of Nazareth missed the presence of Christ because their hearts were closed.
Let us not make the same mistake.
Sometimes the miracle we are praying for is waiting on the other side of a simple act of trust.
7. Prayer
Let us pray.
Lord God,
You know our struggles and our desires.
Teach us to trust Your ways even when we do not understand them.
Give us humble hearts that are open to Your grace.
Help us recognise Your presence in the simple moments of our lives.
May Your healing and mercy transform us each day.
Amen. 🙏
