Second Week of Lent
Readings:

  • Jeremiah 17:5–10

  • Luke 16:19–31

Introduction

Today the Word of God speaks directly to your heart. Lent is not only about giving up something; it is about examining where you place your trust.

Sometimes life quietly pushes you to trust many things—money, status, comfort, connections, even your own strength. But today's readings ask a deeper question:

Where is your heart rooted?

Because whatever you trust most will shape the direction of your life.

Life Story

One day a parish priest visited a wealthy parishioner at his beautiful house. The man proudly showed him everything: the big gate, the expensive cars, the swimming pool, and the huge television.

After the tour, they sat down for tea. As they were talking, a poor man came to the gate asking for food.

The rich man looked at him through the window and said casually,
“Father, you know these people. If you help them once, they will come every day.”

The priest smiled and replied,
“My brother, that may be true. But if we ignore them every day, our hearts may stop hearing God.”

The rich man suddenly became very quiet.

Sometimes the poor person at the gate is not only testing our generosity…
he is also revealing the condition of our heart.

The Word

In the first reading, the prophet Jeremiah gives a powerful image.

“Cursed is the one who trusts in human strength…
Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.”

Jeremiah compares two people:

  • One is like a shrub in the desert – dry, struggling, isolated.

  • The other is like a tree planted near water – strong, stable, fruitful.

The difference is trust.

Then in the Gospel, Jesus tells the story of the rich man and Lazarus.

The rich man is not condemned because he was rich. He is condemned because he ignored the suffering at his gate.

Lazarus was invisible to him.

His heart was closed.

The tragedy is that the rich man only realizes the truth after it is too late.

Jesus is warning you gently today:
Do not wait too long to change your heart.

Three Practical Lessons for You Today

1. Examine what you trust

Ask yourself honestly:
Do you trust God first, or do you trust money, influence, or comfort?

When life shakes you, only God remains stable.

2. Notice the “Lazarus” around you

There are people near you who are struggling—emotionally, financially, spiritually.

Sometimes they are right at your gate.

A kind word, a message, a small act of generosity can change someone’s day.

3. Grow roots in God

Just like Jeremiah’s tree near water, you need daily spiritual nourishment.

Try today:

  • a short prayer

  • a moment of silence

  • a small act of kindness

These simple things slowly root your life in God.

Inspirational Quote

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Your heart always follows what you value most.

Conclusion

Today God invites you to look at your life honestly.

Are you becoming a dry shrub in the desert
or a tree planted by living water?

Lent is not about guilt.

It is about opportunity.

You still have time to grow.
You still have time to open your heart.
You still have time to choose God again.

And the beautiful thing is this:

God is always ready to welcome you.

Prayer

Lord,

Today I bring my heart to You just as it is.
You know where I have trusted in things that cannot truly save me.

Teach me to trust You more deeply.

Open my eyes so that I may see the people around me who need compassion and care.

Plant my life like a tree near living water, so that even in difficult seasons I may remain strong and faithful.

Transform my heart during this Lent.
Help me to grow in love, humility, and generosity.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
