Second Week of Lent
Readings: Daniel 9:4b–10 | Luke 6:36–38
Introduction
My dear friend,
As you begin this new week of Lent, God is not asking for grand gestures from you.
He is asking for a change of heart.
Today’s readings speak about mercy, forgiveness, and honesty before God. This is personal. This is about your heart — not someone else’s.
Life Story
A woman once said,
“I have forgiven him… but I just remember it very clearly.”
We laugh because we understand.
Sometimes we say we forgive — but we keep a mental file.
We forgive… but we don’t forget.
We forgive… but we don’t release.
Today, Jesus challenges that kind of forgiveness.
The Word
Daniel 9:4b–10
Daniel prays a powerful prayer of repentance. He says:
“We have sinned, we have done wrong… we have not listened.”
Notice something beautiful — Daniel includes himself.
Even though he was considered righteous, he does not say, “They have sinned.” He says, “We have sinned.”
True repentance is not defensive.
It does not shift blame.
It takes responsibility.
And then comes this powerful line:
“The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving.”
Before you fix yourself, before you improve, before you prove anything — remember this:
God is merciful.
Luke 6:36–38
Jesus says:
“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”
Not “be right.”
Not “be superior.”
Be merciful.
Then He continues:
“Do not judge… do not condemn… forgive… give.”
The measure you use will be measured back to you.
That means the way you treat others shapes the way your heart experiences God.
Mercy expands your heart. Judgment shrinks it.
Three Practical Lessons for Your Day
1. Take Honest Responsibility
Instead of explaining your faults away, simply say:
“Lord, I was wrong.”
No excuses. No comparisons.
Honesty opens the door to mercy.
2. Release One Person
Think of someone who hurt you.
You may not feel ready — but decide today:
“I choose to release this person to God.”
Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is a decision.
3. Change the Measure
How do you measure others?
Strictly? Harshly? Critically?
Today, measure generously.
Be softer in your judgments.
Be slower to criticise.
Be quicker to understand.
Inspirational Quote
“Mercy is the fragrance that forgiveness leaves on the soul.”
Conclusion
My friend,
Lent is not about appearing holy. It is about becoming merciful.
God is not waiting to condemn you.
He is waiting to forgive you.
And He asks you to do the same for others.
The measure you choose today — mercy or judgment — will shape your spiritual growth.
Choose mercy.
Prayer
Merciful Father,
I come before You honestly.
I have sinned. I have judged. I have held onto resentment.
But You are merciful and forgiving.
Wash my heart clean.
Teach me to forgive as You forgive me.
Help me to release what I am holding onto.
Give me a generous spirit.
Make my heart wide with compassion.
This Lent, shape me into a person of mercy.
I trust in Your kindness, Lord.
Amen.
