Matthew 6:19-23
Introduction
Today's Gospel speaks directly to one of the deepest human experiences: the search for fulfilment.
Every human being is searching for something. We search for happiness, security, recognition, success, love, peace, and purpose. Yet many people discover that after obtaining what they thought would satisfy them, there is still an emptiness within. The human heart has a hunger that material things cannot completely satisfy.
Jesus understands this hunger. That is why He speaks today about treasures, vision, and the condition of the heart.
Life Story
A wealthy businessman spent his entire life accumulating possessions. He owned several houses, luxury cars, expensive watches, and investments.
One day he told his wife, "When I die, I want all my money buried with me."
His wife promised.
At the funeral, just before the coffin was lowered, she placed a small envelope inside.
A friend whispered, "Surely you didn't put all his money in there?"
She replied, "Of course I did. I wrote him a cheque."
The reality is that none of us can take our possessions with us. The only treasures that accompany us into eternity are our relationship with God and the love we have shared with others.
The Word of God
Jesus says:
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven."
In the ancient world, wealth was often measured by clothing, grain, precious metals, and livestock. Clothes could be eaten by moths, grain could rot, and valuables could be stolen.
Jesus is not condemning responsible ownership. He is warning against making earthly possessions the centre of life.
He continues:
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
The heart in biblical language is not merely the seat of emotions. It is the centre of the person—the place of decision, desire, and identity.
Whatever we value most eventually shapes who we become.
Then Jesus uses another image:
"The eye is the lamp of the body."
The eye represents spiritual vision. A healthy eye sees clearly. A diseased eye sees everything distorted.
If our vision is fixed only on money, status, possessions, or worldly success, our entire life becomes distorted.
But if our vision is fixed on God, our lives become filled with light, purpose, and peace.
Jesus Moment
Imagine Jesus looking directly at you today.
Not at the crowd.
Not at humanity in general.
At you.
He sees every disappointment you carry.
He sees the dreams that did not work out.
He sees the prayers that seem unanswered.
He sees the loneliness that nobody else understands.
He sees your desire for something more.
And He gently asks:
"What treasure are you really pursuing?"
Many people spend years climbing ladders only to discover they were leaning against the wrong wall.
Jesus invites us to pursue something greater than success.
He invites us to pursue Him.
Because ultimately we are not simply looking for a better life.
We are looking for the Giver of life.
As St Augustine famously said:
"You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You."
Three Practical Lessons for Today
1. Examine Your Treasure
Ask yourself honestly:
What occupies most of my thoughts?
What do I worry about losing?
What do I sacrifice everything else to obtain?
The answer reveals where your treasure currently lies.
Today, place God back at the centre.
2. Guard Your Spiritual Vision
Be careful what you feed your mind and heart.
What we constantly watch, read, and listen to eventually shapes our outlook.
Spend time with Scripture.
Spend time in prayer.
Spend time in silence.
Allow God's light to guide your vision.
3. Invest in Eternal Things
Every act of kindness, forgiveness, generosity, compassion, prayer, and faithfulness is a deposit in heaven.
Invest today in relationships, service, and love.
Those treasures never lose their value.
Good News for Today
The good news is that God is not asking you to become rich before He loves you.
He is not waiting for you to become perfect before He welcomes you.
Your worth is not determined by your possessions, achievements, or failures.
You are already loved by God.
You are already known by God.
You are already invited into a deeper relationship with God.
And the fulfilment you seek is not found in having more.
It is found in belonging more completely to Him.
Inspirational Quote
"Do not ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." — Howard Thurman
A soul fully alive in God becomes a light for others.
Conclusion
My friend, life is short.
The things we worry about today may be forgotten tomorrow.
The possessions we cling to today will one day belong to someone else.
But our relationship with God endures forever.
Today Jesus invites us to lift our eyes higher, seek treasures that cannot be stolen, and allow His light to fill our hearts.
Do not settle for temporary satisfaction when eternal fulfilment is being offered to you.
Choose the treasure that lasts.
Choose Christ.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You know the deepest desires of my heart.
Too often I seek fulfilment in things that cannot truly satisfy.
Help me to store up treasures in heaven.
Give me clear spiritual vision so that I may walk in Your light.
Teach me to value what is eternal rather than what is temporary.
Fill the empty places within me with Your presence.
May my heart rest in You, trust in You, and follow You every day.
For You alone are my treasure, my light, and my salvation.
Amen.
