Rev. Fr
Wiseman Sihawu April Nkomo
Faithful
Shepherd, Scholar, Pastor, Mentor and Servant of Human Dignity
A Tribute
and Obituary
By Fr Mathibela Sebothoma
The Catholic Church in the Kingdom of
Eswatini, throughout Southern Africa, and beyond its borders mourns the passing
of Rev. Fr Wiseman Sihawu April Nkomo, a devoted priest of the Diocese
of Manzini whose life was a profound witness to faith, service, scholarship,
compassion, and unwavering dedication to the people of God.
Fr Wiseman passed away peacefully on 6 June
2026 following a period of illness. His death has left a deep void in the
hearts of bishops, priests, religious, seminarians, lay faithful, friends,
former students, colleagues, and countless people whose lives were touched by
his ministry.
His passing prompted an extraordinary
outpouring of tributes from every corner of the Church. The voices that emerged
in grief and gratitude revealed not only the priest he was, but also the man he
was: intelligent yet humble, academically gifted yet approachable, disciplined
yet compassionate, and deeply committed to the dignity and wellbeing of every
human person.
As the Church commends his soul to the mercy
of God, it also pauses to celebrate a life generously poured out in service to
Christ and His people.
Early
Calling and Priestly Vocation
The story of Fr Wiseman Nkomo is ultimately
the story of a man who answered God's call and dedicated his life to the
Gospel.
His priesthood was never merely an occupation
or ecclesiastical office. It was the defining reality of his life. Those who
knew him encountered a priest whose identity was rooted in Christ and whose
ministry flowed from a deep personal faith.
Whether celebrating the Eucharist, preaching,
teaching, mentoring, accompanying families, or participating in diocesan
leadership, he carried out his responsibilities with conviction, dignity, and
sincerity.
His priesthood was characterised by a profound
understanding that ministry is fundamentally about people—listening to them,
walking with them, teaching them, encouraging them, and helping them discover
the presence of God in their lives.
Service to
the Diocese of Manzini
At the time of his death, Fr Wiseman was
serving as Parish Priest of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in
Manzini, the mother church of the Diocese of Manzini.
Throughout his years of priestly ministry, he
occupied several significant leadership positions within the Diocese. Among
these were his responsibilities as Diocesan Catechetical Coordinator and
his involvement in Social Communications, where he helped shape faith
formation initiatives and strengthen evangelisation efforts across the Kingdom
of Eswatini.
His contribution to catechesis was
particularly significant. He understood that faith formation is not merely the
transmission of information but the formation of disciples. Through workshops,
parish programmes, retreats, youth initiatives, and educational efforts, he
sought to deepen people's understanding of Christ and the teachings of the
Church.
He also recognised the growing importance of
communication in the life of the Church. Through his involvement in social
communications, he encouraged the use of modern media and communication tools
to proclaim the Gospel effectively in contemporary society.
Those who worked alongside him remember a
priest who approached leadership not as authority to be exercised but as
service to be rendered.
A Brilliant
Mind at the Service of the Gospel
Among the many qualities for which Fr Wiseman
was admired, his intellectual gifts were especially notable.
He was widely regarded as one of the most
academically accomplished priests of the Diocese of Manzini. His passion for
learning and commitment to excellence led him to pursue advanced theological
studies abroad.
His academic journey eventually brought him to
Rome, where he studied at the prestigious Institute of Anthropology (IADC)
at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
The Institute of Anthropology is
internationally recognised for its work in safeguarding, human dignity, and the
protection of vulnerable persons. Fr Wiseman's studies there deepened his
understanding of these crucial issues and strengthened his commitment to
ensuring that the Church remains a place of safety, dignity, justice, and
healing.
Following news of his death, the Institute
expressed its condolences and remembered him as a valued alumnus whose life
embodied the principles of care, compassion, service, and respect for human
dignity.
His education never became a source of pride
or distance from ordinary people. Rather, it strengthened his pastoral
sensitivity and enriched his ability to serve others.
Fr Karabo Baloyi perhaps captured this
dimension of Fr Wiseman best when he wrote:
"A man with a very brilliant mind. Very
heartbreaking news indeed. May his soul rest in the peace of the Risen Lord.
Lala ngokuthula Mphriste. What a good man, with a brilliant mind. A terrible
loss for the Church."
Those words have been echoed by many who
encountered his remarkable intellect and his ability to place knowledge at the
service of faith.
A Priest
Who Loved Young People
One of the defining characteristics of Fr
Wiseman's ministry was his deep love for young people.
He believed passionately that authentic
Christian formation should address the whole person. He frequently encouraged
young people to pursue growth not only spiritually but also intellectually,
emotionally, physically, psychologically, and socially.
His vision of youth ministry was holistic.
He accompanied young people through
catechetical programmes, retreats, leadership formation, vocational
discernment, charitable outreach, and personal mentorship.
Many young Catholics across Eswatini credit Fr
Wiseman with helping them discover their faith more deeply. Others remember him
as a mentor who encouraged them during difficult moments of life.
His guidance often extended beyond church
activities into practical matters of education, relationships, career choices,
and personal growth.
For countless young people, he was not simply
a parish priest. He was a trusted mentor and spiritual father.
A Shepherd
Close to His People
If his academic achievements earned
admiration, it was his humanity that earned affection.
People consistently describe Fr Wiseman as
approachable, attentive, and kind.
He listened carefully.
He remembered names.
He noticed people who were often overlooked.
He understood that pastoral ministry is built
upon presence.
One of the most moving testimonies came from Reabetswe
HÀrdwælk Samaani, who is deaf.
During her orientation year in the Diocese of
Manzini, she struggled to follow the homilies during Mass. Fr Wiseman noticed
this challenge and quietly found a way to help.
Rather than allowing her to remain excluded,
he would write down his homilies and hand them to her after Mass.
Recalling those moments, she said:
"During those weeks, Fr Wiseman made sure
that I could understand his homily. He often wrote it down on pieces of paper
and gave them to me to read. Those were very special moments for me."
Her testimony reveals a priest attentive to
the needs of individuals and committed to ensuring that every person felt
included within the life of the Church.
Shortly before his death, she visited him in
hospital.
Remembering that final encounter, she recalled
the joy that lit up his face when he recognised her.
Her tribute stands as a powerful reminder that
genuine pastoral care is often expressed through small acts of kindness that
leave lifelong memories.
A Ministry
of Quiet Generosity
Numerous tributes highlighted Fr Wiseman's
generosity.
He was known not for grand public gestures but
for thoughtful acts of kindness carried out quietly and without expectation of
recognition.
Among the most touching memories came from Colsile
Sweetlee Manyathela-Bhangu, whose wedding was officiated by Fr Wiseman.
Reflecting on that day, she wrote:
"My husband and I were privileged to have
him officiate our wedding, a day that remains one of the most cherished moments
of our lives."
What moved her even more was what happened
afterward.
"In a humble and generous act that we
will never forget, Fr Wiseman personally bought us a wedding gift. It was not
the value of the gift that touched our hearts, but the thoughtfulness and
genuine care behind it."
Her tribute offers a glimpse into the
character of a man who gave because he cared.
Such gestures, repeated countless times
throughout his ministry, formed an invisible network of kindness that touched
many lives.
Leadership
During Historic Church Events
Fr Wiseman played a visible role in several
important moments in the life of the Church.
Among these was the Golden Jubilee
celebration of the Inter-Regional Meeting of the Bishops of Southern Africa
(IMBISA) in 2025.
During this historic gathering, he helped
welcome bishops and delegates from across Southern Africa and played a
prominent role in leading prayer at the Cathedral.
His participation reflected the esteem in
which he was held both within the Diocese of Manzini and beyond its borders.
His leadership was consistently characterised
by competence, humility, and a willingness to serve wherever needed.
Faithfulness
During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Many parishioners remember Fr Wiseman's
ministry during one of the most difficult periods in recent history: the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Holy Rosary Parish described him as a
"quiet builder of faith."
They recalled his commitment to strengthening
community prayer, supporting vulnerable families, and maintaining catechetical
programmes during periods of uncertainty and isolation.
One particular memory has become emblematic of
his ministry.
During lockdown restrictions, Fr Wiseman stood
before an empty church and preached with exactly the same passion, preparation,
and conviction that he would have shown before a packed congregation.
The empty pews did not diminish his
commitment.
That moment became a powerful witness to his
belief that ministry is not dependent on circumstances but on fidelity to
Christ.
Even when physically separated from his
people, he continued to serve them.
Tributes
from Fellow Priests
The death of Fr Wiseman deeply affected his
brother priests.
Fr Thabo Chomsky Chomane of the Diocese of
Kroonstad remembered their friendship and their last encounter in the Vatican:
"We were in the Vatican when I last saw
him and we enjoyed each other's company as usual. Rest in eternal peace my
friend Fr Wiseman Nkomo."
Fr Tshepo Sentle Lekoko of the Archdiocese of
Johannesburg reflected on his resilience and faith:
"Your resilience and faith will forever
stay with me. Riposa in pace Fr Wiseman Nkomo, fratello sacerdote."
Fr Johny Motsamai Sefafe-Mphatse reflected on
their shared experiences in Rome and expressed hope that one day, when his own
earthly journey is complete, familiar faces—including Fr Wiseman's—will welcome
him into the Kingdom of Heaven.
These tributes reveal the respect and
affection Fr Wiseman enjoyed among his fellow clergy.
Tributes
from Church Communities
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption
described Fr Wiseman's life as a blessing to the parish and expressed
confidence that his memory would continue to inspire future generations.
Holy Rosary Parish remembered him as a
faithful pastor who strengthened prayer, catechesis, and outreach.
Sts Peter and Paul Parish in Kwaluseni gave
thanks for his devoted ministry and entrusted him to the mercy of the Good
Shepherd.
The Diocese of Manzini organised vigils,
memorial gatherings, and liturgical celebrations as clergy and faithful came
together in prayer and gratitude.
The collective response of the Church revealed
how deeply his ministry had touched communities throughout Eswatini.
Tributes
from Healthcare Institutions
Healthcare institutions that encountered Fr
Wiseman during his illness also paid tribute.
Good Shepherd Catholic Hospital remembered him
as:
"A dedicated shepherd, a comforting
presence, and a faithful servant of God who touched countless lives."
Hope House Palliative Care Centre highlighted
his compassion, humility, and commitment to service.
These tributes reflected the dignity and faith
with which he carried himself even during illness.
Fighting
the Good Fight
In reflecting on Fr Wiseman's final years,
Bishop JosΓ© Luis Ponce de LeΓ³n remembered his perseverance, courage, and
dedication.
Despite health challenges, he remained
committed to his vocation.
He continued serving God's people as long as
he was able.
His life calls to mind the words of Saint
Paul:
"I have fought the good fight, I have
finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)
Those words provide a fitting summary of a
priest who remained faithful to his calling until the very end.
A Legacy
That Endures
The true measure of a life is not found in
titles held or positions occupied.
It is found in lives transformed.
Fr Wiseman's legacy lives on:
- In the
young people he mentored.
- In the
families he accompanied.
- In the
students he taught.
- In the
communities he strengthened.
- In the
vulnerable people he protected.
- In the
faith he nurtured.
- In the
Gospel he proclaimed.
- In the
kindness he showed.
- In the
dignity he defended.
His influence cannot be measured simply by
years of service or pastoral assignments.
It is measured in the countless individuals
who encountered Christ through him.
Future generations may never know all the
hidden sacrifices he made or all the lives he quietly touched.
Yet the fruits of his ministry will continue
to bear fruit long after his passing.
Farewell to
a Faithful Servant

Africa gives thanks to Almighty God for the life and ministry of Rev. Fr
Wiseman Sihawu April Nkomo.
He was a faithful priest.
A gifted scholar.
A compassionate pastor.
A mentor to the young.
A defender of human dignity.
A servant of the Gospel.
And above all, a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Though his earthly pilgrimage has ended, his
witness remains.
May Christ the Good Shepherd, whom he served
so faithfully throughout his life, now welcome him into the Father's eternal
Kingdom.
May the angels lead him into paradise.
May the saints receive him with joy.
May perpetual light shine upon him forever.
And may his memory remain a blessing to all
who knew and loved him.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let
perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
